Imagine yourself rappelling down waterfalls and cliffs in a spectacular canyon. Swim beneath waterfalls and across deep pools. Enjoy hiking through the Maui rain forest, perhaps even washing and conditioning your hair with shampoo ginger. This thrilling Maui activity offers easy beginning canyoning as well as more advanced adrenalin rushes. We rig our rappels so that you can't fall, even if you freak out or pass out or forget everything we teach you about how to do this. This is an activity that should not be missed.

From our meeting spot in Central Maui, ride with us for an hour and ten minutes out the famous Hana Highway to Puohokamoa Valley. We'll hike a quarter mile through the rain forest to the top of a ridge above a 300-foot-deep valley. Our first rappel is down a 40-foot cliff for practice. Then we'll rappel down 30- and 50-foot waterfalls. There will be opportunities to swim beneath the waterfalls. During most of the year there's wild fruit to eat along the trail.

Our policy is to provide a guide at the top of the cliff to make sure you begin the rappel safely. At the bottom of the rappel we have a second guide who belays you. That means that (s)he can control your descent if necessary and stop you at any time or guide you gently to the bottom if necessary. Our guide at the top can pull you back up, if you need that kind of assistance. Our entire program is geared for safety.

Our exit is a 300-foot ascent up a steep, but well-built trail. You should be in good condition to participate in this trip.

Since safety is a primary concern, we have a competent and experienced guide staff. Our anchors, ropes, harnesses, hardware and helmets are specially-designed for the rigors of this extreme sport. All of our equipment is the best available, ropes are checked thoroughly on a daily basis, and we keep accurate rope logs. All gear is maintained in top condition, or it is replaced. Every piece of equipment we use is rated for enormous loads.

Prior to every trip we check the water level and discharge volume in the many streams in Maui that have electronic monitoring devices that display their data on the USGS website in real time. We also keep a close watch on the weather patterns. If there's any danger of flooding, we change our itinerary to allow us to stay out of the water, but still have challenging rappel routes adjacent to the stream and waterfalls. If the water does begin to rise while we're in the canyon, we have emergency exit routes for each stage, and our guides are trained in swift-water rescue techniques as well and are experienced in reading the weather conditions of our islands.

Transfers are only offered for the 9:30am tour time. Pick up hotels are Hotel Wailea, Fairmont Kea Lani Hotel, Four Seasons, Grand Wailea Resort & Spa, Wailea Beach Villas, Wailea Marriott, Andaz, and Palms at Wailea. Pick up starts at 8:30am.
